Company History

Ion Beam Milling, Inc., a Woman Owned Small Business was founded in 1982 by husband and wife team Robert and Gail Quagan with venture capital funding provided by Commonwealth Scientific of Alexandria, VA.  Three years later, the Quagans bought out Commonwealth’s position and took full control of the company.  Located in Manchester, NH since its founding, the company has enjoyed consistent growth year over year and operates a purpose-built state of the art Thin Film facility.

After obtaining his degree in Electrical Engineering from Northeastern University, Robert Quagan worked for Varian Associates (now CPI) in Beverly, MA under the tutelage of Dr. Joseph Saloom and Dr. Edward Cook.  Robert co-founded Micro-Dynamics in Woburn, MA (Micro-dynamics was later acquired by Herley New England in 1992) before going on to work for Sanders (which was acquired by BAE) as a New Product Manager.  After that, he served as a consultant to Raytheon in the Microwave/RF arena.  It was during his time at Raytheon that Bob and Gail had a vision for the founding of Ion Beam Milling and developed their business plan.

With nearly fifty years of experience in the RF and Microwave industries, Bob Quagan has always set high standards of excellence in both Photolithography and Ion Beam Milling procedures.  Holding the positions of Chairman and Chief Engineer, Bob remains actively involved with the technical operations of the company.  Gail has managed the business end of the company since its founding and continues on in the role of Chief Financial Officer.

As the company enters its 36 year in the Thin Film Industry, the twin focus remains on improving our capabilities with core products as well as developing new applications for our technology.

Ion Beam Milling is an ISO 9001:2008 certified company and is a registered Manufacturer with the United States Department of State, Office of Defense Trade Controls and Compliance.
